10. Argentina 1986-1990

You will always have a chance to win a World Cup if you have a player like Diego Maradona, who is genuinely a remarkable talent.

English eyes may be drawn to Maradona’s notorious “Hand of God” goal in the tournament’s quarterfinal in Mexico in 1986, but the tiny magician was responsible for much more.

His team defeated West Germany 3-2 in the championship match that year in Mexico City, but four years later, they fell to the same opponents 1-0 in Rome.

9. France 1982–1986

The French showed potential in 1982 by reaching the World Cup semifinals, but two years later, Platini dominated Europe by scoring an incredible nine goals in five games as France won the European Championship as hosts in 1984.

In the semifinal match, they defeated Portugal 3-2. It was a thrilling game in which Platini scored the game-winning goal in the last second of extra time.

The 1986 World Cup saw Les Bleus advance to the semifinals with Platini against the pulse.

8. Hungary 1950–1966

They were known as the Magical Magyars outside of Hungary, where they were known as The Golden Team.

The Hungarians, motivated by players like Ferenc Puskas, shocked the football world by defeating England 6-3 at Wembley in 1953 and 7-1 in Budapest the following year.

They were widely predicted to win the 1954 World Cup. After the hard-fought victory against Brazil in the quarterfinal and the defending champions Uruguay in the semifinals, they led West Germany 2-0 in the final in Bern before losing 3-2 to their opponents.

It was Hungary’s lone loss when the squad was disbanded in 50 games between 1950 and 1956.

7. Netherlands 1974-1978 

While this team faced successive World Cup final losses, it’s essential to appreciate their exceptional style of play. Guided by the legendary John Cruyff, the Dutch team, donning their iconic orange shirts, played a thrilling and attacking brand of football that captured hearts worldwide. Unfortunately, their style didn’t translate into trophies as they finished as runners-up in the 1974 and 1978 World Cups and claimed third place in Euro ’76.

Despite associations with Benito Mussolini, Italy’s team from 1934 to 1938 left no doubts about their quality.
